How Old Do You Have To Be To Get Braces?

How Old Do You Have To Be To Get Braces?

A healthy mouth is dependent upon the proper alignment of the teeth. Misalignment of teeth may result in dental problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, specific jaw problems, and speech difficulties. Here comes the importance of dental braces that effectively addresses this not-so-casual problem.

For Children:

Childhood is when a child’s teeth, mouth, and jaw undergo a great deal of change. Growth may affect their teeth and bite alignment. A child’s orthodontic problems will typically become apparent by the age of seven. A few examples include:

  • Uneven bite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Protruding teeth

To correct your child’s malocclusion or misaligned teeth and give them a confident smile, you need to get them braces on their teeth. One of the most frequently asked questions is How Old Do You Have To Be To Get Braces?

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong age. Dental braces are only recommended for younger patients who have a complete set of permanent teeth. A child should visit an orthodontist in advance of receiving braces. The best time to begin seeing an orthodontist for your child is by the age of seven if you suspect they may need orthodontic treatment.

In the case of Adults :

Adults can get braces at any age they want. But, for adults to receive the same benefits from braces, a few things need to be taken into account.

Teeth and jaws need to be strong :

only If you have a healthy set of teeth and a normal jawbone you can receive dental braces as an adult. Orthodontics and other experts recommend this to prevent dental complications such as jaw problems, gum disease, or tooth decay.

Misalignments can be complex in some cases :

A more severe misalignment may be difficult to correct when adult teeth have stopped growing. It is possible to achieve the same results as a child or adolescent with orthodontic treatment, but certain structural changes cannot be achieved by braces alone. This will require additional procedures, such as oral surgery. Obviously, each case is different and does not necessarily relate to an individual’s age.

The treatment goes beyond orthodontics :

Before adult patients can receive orthodontic treatment, they may need to address other dental issues first. If you are at risk for gum disease or have gum disease already, you may be referred to a periodontist. Those who have neglected their oral hygiene as adults may also require fillings, root canals, or other dental treatments before getting braces.

Even though these requirements may seem restrictive, research has shown that the use of braces for the correction of adult teeth can often be just as effective as the use of braces for children.

Orthodontic braces have become a common treatment for misaligned teeth and jaws. While there is no set age at which braces should be applied, many orthodontists recommend that children get an initial examination by age seven. This is because the jaw and facial bones are still developing during this period, making it easier to correct any misalignments. The ideal age to begin dental braces treatment will depend on the individual’s specific needs and the orthodontist’s recommendations. When it comes to straightening teeth, the perfect age is between 10 and 14 years old, primarily because the head and mouth are still growing at this stage, and the teeth are more susceptible to straightening at this time.
